How It Works

Four simple steps to your booking.

  1. Choose the right format

Start with the time you want on the ice. The classic heli-hike offers up to 2.5 hours of guided glacier exploration; the extended hike allows up to 5.5 hours. A scenic flight with an alpine landing is a different experience and does not include a guided glacier hike.

  2. Check your group’s suitability

Before choosing a date, review the selected option’s age, weight and fitness requirements. The classic listing has a minimum age of 10, alongside minimum height and weight requirements. Share relevant concerns with the operator before paying, and use the current booking conditions to assess your group.

  3. Reserve early in your stay

Select your participants, date and option on GetYourGuide. Booking your first available day gives you more room to move if the weather prevents flying. Read the cancellation deadline shown for your reservation, save your confirmation and keep the rest of the day flexible.

  4. Arrive ready for the glacier

Follow the meeting instructions on your voucher. The classic listing asks you to check in 15 minutes before departure at Franz Josef Glacier Guides, 63 Cron Street. Bring warm layers, sunglasses and water; the team fits glacier equipment and explains the day’s conditions before flying.

From the valley to the ice

Your heli-hike, step by step

A typical classic heli-hike sequence. The guide chooses the route for conditions; timings and individual ice formations are not guaranteed.

  1. Meet and get equipped — Arrive at the Franz Josef Glacier Guides base on Cron Street, ready for check-in 15 minutes before departure. The team fits your glacier equipment and explains the day’s plan. This preparation is part of the experience’s total duration, so do not confuse the advertised ice time with the complete outing.
  2. Lift above the valley — Walk to the helipad after the briefing and board for the short transfer. Rainforest, the glacier valley and alpine terrain come into view as you climb. The classic listing describes approximately four minutes each way: an exciting introduction, with the longer walking experience still ahead.
  3. Take your first steps on the glacier — After landing, your guide prepares the group to walk in crampons. Notice the texture of the ice and how the terrain differs from a normal footpath. Follow the instructions and the chosen route as the group settles into the pace of the day.
  4. Explore a changing ice landscape — The guided walk allows up to 2.5 hours on the glacier. Look for blue ice, crevasses and sculpted formations while learning from your guide. Routes change with conditions, so treat caves and tunnels in photographs as examples of the landscape rather than guaranteed stops on your departure.
  5. Fly back to Franz Josef — Return to the helicopter landing area when directed and fly back towards the valley. Equipment return and the final arrangements complete the outing. Leave room in your schedule for the full booked duration and possible delays before committing to another activity or a long onward drive.

Choose the right glacier experience

Know before you go

Choose your day on the glacier

The decision is how you want to experience the glacier

A Franz Josef heli-hike combines two experiences that are easy to confuse when comparing booking cards: a helicopter transfer and a guided walk on glacier ice. The flight gets you into the mountains; the walk gives you time to notice the ice under your feet, follow your guide between formations and see details that disappear from an aircraft window. If that close encounter is the reason for your visit, choose a booking that explicitly includes the glacier hike.

The classic Franz Josef heli-hike includes return helicopter transfers, a professional guide and specialist equipment, with up to 2.5 hours on the ice. The listing offers more than one group format, so check the particular option instead of assuming the starting price applies to every departure. Our classic heli-hike breakdown covers this booking in detail. The price and tour-selection guide explains the practical differences.

Classic hike, extended hike or scenic flight?

The classic experience is a sensible starting point for visitors who want a substantial introduction to glacier walking without committing the entire day to an extended route. You still need reasonable fitness and agility. Uneven ice, steps and changing terrain make it a more active outing than a scenic flight with a short stop.

The extended small-group heli-hike allows up to 5.5 hours on the glacier and limits the group to four guests per guide. A picnic lunch and drinks are included. Its listed duration is eight hours, and its minimum age is higher than the classic trip’s. Choose it for the extra ice time and smaller group, not simply because it is described as premium. The published minimum participation requirement also matters: four guests are needed for the experience to run.

The scenic helicopter flight with an alpine landing serves a different wish. It offers an aerial view and a short landing rather than a guided glacier hike. Snow at the landing site is not guaranteed in summer. It costs less than either heli-hike in the checked listings, but the difference buys a different activity rather than a discounted version of the same day. Compare hiking and flightseeing before choosing on price alone.

What happens between check-in and the ice

For the classic listing, the meeting point is Franz Josef Glacier Guides at 63 Cron Street. Check-in is required 15 minutes before the trip time. The team fits equipment and explains the helicopter and glacier procedures before the walk to the helipad. Keep your booking voucher available and use its current meeting instructions if anything changes.

After landing, the guide prepares the group for walking with crampons. The route follows what is safe and worthwhile that day. You may see vivid blue ice and sculpted formations, but no photograph can guarantee a particular cave, tunnel or crevasse will be accessible. Follow the guide’s track and instructions rather than trying to recreate a photograph from an earlier visitor. Our what-to-expect guide separates the booking duration, transfers and time on the glacier.

Equipment is supplied; your layers still matter

The classic trip includes crampons, boots, poles, waterproof gear, helmet and gloves. That takes care of specialist equipment, but you still bring suitable clothing underneath. Warm layers, long trousers, sunglasses, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle are on the listing’s preparation list. Avoid filling a large bag: luggage, drones and selfie sticks are among the prohibited items.

Think of preparation as making it easy to adjust to activity and conditions. A waterproof outer layer is not a substitute for warm clothing, and carrying everything you own makes a walking day less comfortable. Check the operator’s latest instructions before packing. The clothing and packing guide distinguishes supplied gear from personal items.

Check suitability before you select a date

The classic listing requires children to be at least 10 years old, weigh at least 35 kg and be at least 137 cm tall. It excludes pregnant guests, people with back problems and people over 115 kg. The extended hike has a minimum age of 14. Those are product-specific rules, not general rules for every activity around Franz Josef.

If a requirement is close to the limit or a health concern could affect participation, contact the operator before reserving. A scenic flight is not automatically suitable either: it has its own mobility restrictions and weight-related seating terms. A clear answer before booking is more useful than arriving with a reservation for an activity your group cannot join.

Leave room for weather and another perspective

Book your first available day in Franz Josef where possible. The classic listing recommends this because flights depend on suitable conditions, leaving later time in your stay useful for rescheduling. A promising forecast is not a guarantee, and an early departure does not remove the weather risk. Read our weather and cancellation guide to distinguish your cancellation deadline from an operator-cancelled departure.

For another perspective, the guided glacier lookout walk focuses on rainforest, rivers and the valley. It does not reach or touch the glacier. The Lake Mapourika cruise offers a covered boat, local commentary and rainforest scenery. Both are separate bookings with their own operating conditions. Our heli-hike and lake-cruise itinerary explains how to leave enough space between them without treating separate tickets as a guaranteed package.
