Can You Still Walk to Franz Josef Glacier? Free vs Paid Options

The free Franz Josef valley walk ends at a viewpoint, not on the ice. See the public tracks, parking charges and the paid ways onto the glacier.

Updated 30 October 2026

You can walk to a viewpoint over Franz Josef Glacier for free, but the public track stops well short of the ice. To stand or walk on the glacier, you book a guided trip that flies you up by helicopter.

Quick answer

The public walk from the Glacier Access Road car park takes you through rainforest to a viewing area over the valley, with the upper glacier in the distance. It does not reach the ice. Guided helicopter trips are the normal way for visitors to stand or walk on Franz Josef Glacier.

At a glance

Visitor questionPractical answer
Can you reach glacier ice on the public walk? No. The track ends at a valley viewing area, and the Waiho River blocks the way farther up.
Is a helicopter required to walk on the ice?Yes for visitors. Guided glacier walks and landings start with a helicopter flight.
Is the walk free? The walk is free. Parking at the car park costs $2.50 per half hour or $20 per day.
Do summer flights always operate? No. Wind, rain, cloud and landing conditions can cancel them in any month.
How long should you stay? Two nights give you a second chance to fly if the first day is cancelled.

Why the old glacier approach no longer works

The glacier has retreated a long way up the valley, and the Waiho River has changed course across the valley floor. The Department of Conservation (DOC) says the river blocks access on foot beyond the viewing area. Do not cross barriers or follow directions from an old guidebook, because the route those books describe now runs into the riverbed. DOC can close the track after heavy rain, flooding or rockfall, so check its alerts on the morning you go.

Main free Franz Josef Glacier Walk

The Franz Josef Glacier / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere Walk starts at the car park at the end of the Glacier Access Road, about 4 km from the township. You can drive, cycle or walk that stretch. From the car park, DOC describes a short walk through rainforest with one short uphill section, passing waterfalls and views of the mountain tops before you reach the viewing area.

Parking is paid by card at a machine on arrival: $2.50 per half hour or $20 per day, with no charge if you leave within 10 minutes. Cash is not accepted. Drones are not allowed in the area.

Sentinel Rock and Peters Pool

Sentinel Rock is a short climb from the same area to a raised lookout, with panels about how far the glacier has retreated. Peters Pool is a walk of about 1.1 km return to a small lake in the forest, which reflects the mountains on a still day. Neither route reaches the ice.

Douglas Walk and Alex Knob

The Douglas Walk is a loop of about an hour through rainforest and glacial landforms, taking in Peters Pool and the historic Douglas suspension bridge. Alex Knob is a different matter: a steep full-day climb for fit, well-equipped hikers that gives higher views of the glacier in clear weather. It is not an easy substitute for the short viewpoint track.

If you would like someone to explain the valley as you walk, the guided glacier lookout walk (NZ$115, 4.8/5 from 172 reviews) covers the rainforest, rivers and glacier history from below. It stays off the ice too.

The classic guided heli-hike (NZ$899, 4.7/5 from 408 reviews) flies you up to the glacier for up to 2.5 hours of walking on the ice with crampons and a guide. It suits active visitors aged 10 and over who meet the operator’s height and weight limits. The operator puts the whole trip at up to four hours from check-in.

A guided glacier landing is the shorter way to stand on the ice. Franz Josef Glacier Guides runs a Glacier Encounter with about 15 minutes on the glacier, roughly an hour from check-in to finish, for ages 4 and over, at NZ$699 per adult or child. It is sold through the operator and is not listed on GetYourGuide.

Sightseeing flights with a snow or alpine landing are a third option, and they are not the same as ice access. The scenic flight with an alpine landing (NZ$395, 4.8/5 from 697 reviews) lands in the mountains, and its listing says summer landings may be on alpine terrain without snow.

Frequently asked questions

Is Franz Josef worth visiting without a helicopter?

Yes, if you are driving the West Coast anyway. The valley walk, Peters Pool and Sentinel Rock give you rainforest, waterfalls and a distant view of the glacier in a couple of hours, but none of them reach the ice.

Can I see blue ice in summer?

You can see blue ice on a heli-hike or glacier landing at any time of year. No operator can promise a particular cave or formation, because the ice changes from week to week.

What happens if my helicopter tour is cancelled?

Ask the operator about the next safe departure and the refund or rebooking terms on your exact booking. A poor forecast does not automatically cancel the trip, so check in at the time you were given unless the operator tells you otherwise. The weather and cancellation guide explains how to plan around it.

Are snow landings and heli-hikes the same?

No. Some sightseeing flights land on an alpine snowfield or bare rock, while a heli-hike includes an extended guided walk on the glacier ice itself.

How far in advance should I plan?

Book once your dates are fairly fixed, particularly for the December–January holidays. If walking on the glacier is the main reason for your visit, leave a spare morning in case the first flight is grounded.
