Add the lake cruise as a separate ticket

Lake Mapourika Rainforest Cruise is operated by Franz Josef Wilderness Tours. Its checked starting price is NZ$125 per person. It includes the cruise, transfers between the Franz Josef meeting point and the lake, tea and coffee, and listed national park fees. This is a component price, not the price of a package with the hike.

A two-day plan is easier to adjust

Reserve the heli-hike on your first available day in Franz Josef where possible. Keep a later part of your stay available if the operator offers a weather rebooking. The classic listing spans 4–8 hours across options, so confirm the exact duration instead of treating the ice time as your complete appointment.

Put the lake cruise on a separate day when practical. If you want both on the same day, check the actual departure and return times with both operators and leave a generous buffer. Neither provider is responsible for moving a separate reservation because the other trip runs late or changes. There is no verified combined ticket or protected connection offered on this page.

What each day feels like

The heli-hike is the active part: equipment fitting, a helicopter transfer and a guide-led route through changing glacier formations. It requires reasonable fitness and agility and has published age, height and weight restrictions. Read the difficulty and preparation guide before reserving for a group.

The lake cruise has an enclosed cabin and covered deck. The skipper shares local stories while you travel beside rainforest and sheltered bays. Mountain reflections depend on visibility and calm water, and birds are not guaranteed. Passing the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary shoreline should not be confused with a guaranteed kiwi-viewing activity.

Meeting points and transfers

The classic hike meets at Franz Josef Glacier Guides, 63 Cron Street, with check-in 15 minutes before the trip time. The cruise meets at 30 Main Road and includes transport to and from the lake. Those are distinct starting points. Follow each booking voucher and allow time to return equipment or complete check-in rather than assuming the activities connect directly.

Do not assume your hotel transfers are covered. The hike excludes hotel pickup, while the cruise includes its own meeting-point-to-lake transfer. If you need an additional transfer, ask before booking and keep any separate cost outside the listed component prices.

Weather and cancellation remain separate

The heli-hike requires suitable flying and glacier conditions. The cruise is advertised as operating rain or shine, although the operator still controls whether it can run. A cancelled hike does not automatically cancel or refund the cruise. If you decide to change one booking, check that reservation’s deadline and conditions.
