How It Works
Four simple steps to your booking.
Choose the right format
Start with the time you want on the ice. The classic heli-hike offers up to 2.5 hours of guided glacier exploration; the extended hike allows up to 5.5 hours. A scenic flight with an alpine landing is a different experience and does not include a guided glacier hike.
Check your group’s suitability
Before choosing a date, review the selected option’s age, weight and fitness requirements. The classic listing has a minimum age of 10, alongside minimum height and weight requirements. Share relevant concerns with the operator before paying, and use the current booking conditions to assess your group.
Reserve early in your stay
Select your participants, date and option on GetYourGuide. Booking your first available day gives you more room to move if the weather prevents flying. Read the cancellation deadline shown for your reservation, save your confirmation and keep the rest of the day flexible.
Arrive ready for the glacier
Follow the meeting instructions on your voucher. The classic listing asks you to check in 15 minutes before departure at Franz Josef Glacier Guides, 63 Cron Street. Bring warm layers, sunglasses and water; the team fits glacier equipment and explains the day’s conditions before flying.

Which experience fits your visit?
The experience you are buying
A classic heli-hike uses a helicopter to reach a guided walking route on the glacier. It includes specialist equipment and up to 2.5 hours on the ice. The helicopter transfer is short; the walk is the main activity. Expect uneven terrain and a guide-led route that adapts to conditions.
The scenic flight with an alpine landing is primarily sightseeing. The listing describes a 25-minute experience, pilot commentary through a headset and an approximately ten-minute landing. It does not include the sustained guided glacier walk. Check the option’s exact timing rather than adding those figures together.
Snow, ice and the meaning of a landing
Landing does not mean the same thing in both bookings. On a heli-hike, the guide prepares you to move through glacier terrain using equipment such as crampons. On the scenic flight, you step outside for the views and photographs at a landing site selected for conditions. The flight listing says that summer conditions may require an alpine landing without snow.
Neither experience guarantees the exact landscape shown in a photograph. Glacier formations change and weather can affect access. If walking among blue-ice formations is the part you care about, a scenic landing is unlikely to satisfy the same expectation.
Cost and time commitment
The checked classic starting price is NZ$899 per person, compared with NZ$395 for the scenic flight. Those amounts refer to different activities. The classic listing displays 4–8 hours across options, including preparation and transfers. The flight is much shorter, although you still need its required check-in time and allowance for changes.
For a longer walking day, the extended small-group heli-hike starts at NZ$1,549 per person and offers up to 5.5 hours on the ice within an eight-hour booking. It includes a picnic lunch and a maximum of four guests per guide. See the price guide for a like-for-like breakdown.
Suitability can decide the question
The classic hike needs reasonable fitness and agility. Its child requirements include a minimum age of 10, height of 137 cm and weight of 35 kg. The listing excludes pregnant guests, people with back problems and people over 115 kg. These are material requirements, not packing suggestions.
A scenic flight involves less walking, but it is not automatically accessible to everyone. The selected listing excludes wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments. It also requires a paid comfort seat for passengers weighing 120 kg or more at check-in. Contact the operator about your group before booking if a limit or access need is relevant.
Neither choice removes the weather risk
Both depend on flying conditions. The short scenic flight has a single route and landing site, which the operator identifies as a limitation when weather affects them. Do not treat it as a guaranteed rescue plan for a cancelled heli-hike.
Leave flexibility in your stay and understand the weather cancellation terms. If a non-flying outing would still appeal, the guided valley and lookout walk is a separate option. It explores the landscape from below and explicitly does not walk on or touch glacier ice.
